Tax Planning

Why is filing your taxes, without doing Tax Planning first, a bad strategy?
Because ignorance is NOT bliss, it’s dangerous. You don’t know what you don’t know and that can HURT you big time!

Many people avoid thinking about taxes until filing time because they feel at the effect of taxes and powerless about the outcome. They worry as tax time approaches. They hope the tax magician will create powerful magic. They dread to see the “Taxes due” number. And they dread the tax practitioner’s bill. And they repeat this awful process next year and the year after that and the year after that.

There is a much better way to think about your taxes. And it’s even fun!

Your Specific Situation

You may think your situation is simple, but from my point of view as a expert, there may be many tax laws and regulations relating to your issue. And what you think of as a single issue may, in fact, be several.

Conversely, you may think your question is complex and there should be lots of room to maneuver. Surprise! Sometimes lax law is clear black and white and there is only one answer.

Sometimes what you think is a problem has potential tax reduction opportunities hidden in it. Opportunities that you would never have guessed on your own!

Or the opportunity you are excited about may come with some surprising tax consequences.

YOUR Scenarios and Choices

This is my favorite game! First, you get to dream about what kind of life you’d like to live, What’s really important to you? The clearer you are about where to want to wind up, the clearer your choices become. Let’s build a financial foundation for that life.

Then we play the “If This, Then What?” game. We take your situation and think of different possible scenarios. What are different ways that this situation could play out?  What are the possible tax and other financial implications? What about the personal fulfillment outcomes?

Given your life goals and the financial implications of the scenario, what are your realistic choices? What if you make a different choice? What are those implications? I always look for ways to reduce federal, state or local tax liabilities to the fullest extent of the law. And I also understand that sometimes a personal goal is more important than getting the maximum tax saving.
